Happy 2 month Birthday, handsome

Our handsome boy turned 2 months old on October 15, 2012, while we were in Orange Beach, Alabama on vacation/work conference for J.

He woke up all smiles that morning, like he knew it was his "birthday"
melt me!!
So, since it was a work conference for J that took us to the beach, Pierce and I had some free time in the hotel.  What do you do when you have a nice camera?  Take a ton of pictures...I'll just share with you guys my favorites!

Still not the best at focus, but much much better lol

I love those feet

0-3 month outfit, the waist of the pants is a bit big, and as you can see far too long lol

HA!!

My big boy!!

And, here's a pic of J and his twin:
and because we can't have a side by side of Daddy and Pierce without a side by side of Mommie and Pierce

9 weeks

Pierce, can't you slow down time?!  Mommie only has 3 more weeks of maternity leave, and you're changing every day!

Same weight stats, as he goes to the doctor Friday and I can update then.

Still wearing size 1 Pampers Swaddlers (LOVE them, for any of my pregnant friends wondering what diapers to get!  SWEAR by these things!)
Still wearing Newborn pants because he's so skinny!  Just chunking up in the cheeks and chin, lol!  Wearing 0-3mo sleepers and some onsies, they're a bit long, but not too much so.

Pierce has:

  •  Been on his first beach trip (October 14-18), we got to accompany Daddy on a work conference! He travelled pretty well, would fuss a bit when he got tired of being in the carseat, but over all just slept.  Complete post about the trip soon
  • Deliberately hits the bug toys on his bouncey seat playbar every time they're infront of him, I loved watching him slowly and purposefully reach out and touch or hit the bugs
  • Spent time away from Mommie.  I went shopping with my bff, while Pierce and Daddy went to visit Pierce's Nonnie and Grandpa JimJim (ever seen Couples Retreat?  The kids call their grandfather Grandpa Jim Jim, and the little kid has a lisp...it's too cute)
  • Spent time with a "sitter" for a little over an hour while we were at the beach.  THANK YOU, Emily it was great to be able to take some time just J and I to walk the beach and talk.
  • Started smiling, a lot!  He imitates smiles now, has a coo when he smiles some times
The morning of his 2 month birthday

  • Started sticking his tongue out when you stick your's out at him.  His Daddy taught him that one...he's also trying to pucker his lips when you pucker at him...again, Daddy.  J finds these things amazing and teaches him how to make faces lol.
  • Got his first diaper rash, but we've cleared it up quickly with the use of powder and not pastes or creams
  • Started regularly eating 5 oz, and sometimes wants as much as 2 more ounces an hour later!  Holy growing, Batman
  • Grabbed his toy rings, though I'm not sure if he did it on purpose or out of madness...he was pissed when he did it.  But, he has started holding our fingers through out the day when our hands are on him or while we hold his bottle.

see, he was pissed lol
I feel like I'm forgetting things, but J can't remember any more either so we'll leave it at that!

Here goes nothing...

**Please note that this is a post that represents our family and what works best for us and in no way am I slamming anyone who doesn't parent the way we do.  What works for us, or for you, may not work for everyone**

Since Pierce was about 5-6 weeks old we started having more and more troubles getting him to sleep on his back.  He refused.  So, no crib no cradle.  For a week or so he would only sleep in his swing, so we moved it into our bedroom.  Then, he started not wanting to sleep in there and would only sleep on my chest or on his belly.  His head control isn't quite where I want it to be for him to sleep on his belly on anything soft (i.e. matress) so he would sleep on the floor while I slept on the couch next to him.  He would wake up and eat, and the only way I could get him to sleep again was on my chest.  So I would sleep on the couch a lot and it started bothering my back.  Naturally, that progressed to me having him sleep on my chest in bed so at least I could be more comfortable.
Finally, we got him back to sleeping in his swing...with a few nights turning into co-sleeping again.  One thing we said, while we were pregnant, was that we would NOT co-sleep.  Why?
It's really important to us to keep a marital bed.  It's very important to us to have space just for J and I.  When you have a baby in the bed with you, you can't have those things.  Also, for us, we couldn't sleep as well as we would if there wasn't a tiny boy in our bed.
When we were packing for our beach trip we didn't have room for anything other than our luggage since I didn't want to leave the stroller.  It was bring the stroller or bring the swing (it's a full sized swing that converts to a travel fold up swing) for him to sleep in.  I thought it would be horrible if we chose the stroller over the swing and figured, what-the-hey he's been sleeping in bed with us as it is.  Well, problem came when we got to the hotel and the beds were doubles and not a queen like we're used to.  We had less bed space and neither of us were comfortable with putting Pierce in the middle of us.
So, what did my genius come up with?  I figured he slept really well in his car seat on the 8 hour drive to the beach so why not have him sleep in it?  Plenty people do it, right?  I spied the large, heavy, wood framed chair in the room and decided that it would be the base to this "bassinet" I was going to rig up.
I pulled the straps all the way out so that he wouldn't be laying on them, and rocked the carseat all the way back so he would be laying nearly flat and we wouldn't have to worry about his neck and his head being in his lap!  I put one of his blankets in the carseat so maybe it wouldn't feel like the car seat to him.

That worked really well all 3 nights.  He slept better than he had slept since getting home from the NICU!
Side note: I think they have to dope babies in the hospital, they sleep so dang well and as soon as they get home BAM no sleeping.  It has to be drugs.  lol, I'm only kidding...or am I?

So, we got home the day Pierce turned 9 weeks.  It was a long ride back, he got home got his bottle and just fussed for a few hours.  Nothing was wrong, he was just over tired, over stimulated and just fussed.  Finally got him happy and sitting in his bouncey chair and he fell flat asleep.  After he had been asleep for over an hour I looked at J and said, "Let's try the crib?!"
So, I carried him to his crib, J started the mobile and sound/light show on it and after laying Pierce in his crib, covering him, he didn't move.  Slept there until 3 or 3:30 when he woke up for a bottle.
For his bottle, we decided to not change his environment, not light up his room, so we just turned on the hall light and J gave him his bottle in the dark.  It took about 5 minutes of rocking to get him to sleep in my arms, but when I laid him down, POP those eyes were open and he fussed.  I refused to give in and pick him up.  J nor I spoke.  We just took turns laying our hands on his chest so he knew we were there, and just soothed him back to sleep.  20 minutes of this, and he was sleeping.
As soon as we walked out of the room he started fussing, but never cried and his fusses would stop after a few seconds.  So, I never walked back in there and got in bed figuring he would be in his swing or our bed within 30 minutes.  Not the case!  We all slept like babies in our proper beds!!
Pierce woke up hungry at around 7:30, J went in, changed him, and brought him to bed to nurse.  That's my snuggle time with him, our morning nursing.  We snuggle, he eats, and then we sleep until 10 or so.  So, I guess that's still co-sleeping.  lol

Fastforward to nap time.  I call it nap time, it's whenever Pierce falls asleep time around here, as we just go by whatever happens that day, we have few schedules other than bathtime at 9 on bath nights.  How that happened I don't know, but it usually ensures that Pierce is asleep for the night at midnight.  He's starting to set his own schedules which works for me.
I've wandered off path here...nap time?  Yes, nap time.  He was fussing and I got him to sleep in my arms.  He wasn't asleep very long when I decided to try the crib again.  Laid him down, fussed, hand on the chest, no talking, mobile with music on...asleep!  He's been sleeping now for over an hour and I've had to go in once to put my hand on his chest and settle him back to sleep!

Because of all of that, J and I decided since he'll be home tonight (Thursday) through Sunday night, we're going to do the crib thing.  Pierce will be sleep trained this weekend...or we'll be whipped.  One of us will win this war this weekend...and I'm not too proud to say Pierce could win.

I'm not dead set on him sleeping in his crib every night until he's 12 weeks.  He'll be 3 months old and start to have better muscle control.  It just seems like a good age for him to be sleeping in his crib if we can't get him there before then.  If we get half nights in the crib until then, we're happy with that.

I felt bad when I got into my 3rd trimester because I had yet to read any sleep training books, no parenting books, nothing.  I had done enough research on Attachment Parenting and on the Cry It Out method that I knew what would work for J and I and it would be mostly CIO, with maybe a few small AP things thrown in there.  We were going blind into this parenting thing, hoping it came naturally for us.  I mean, I had babysat, we both have nieces and nephews, it doesn't take a degree right?!
Nope, it doesn't.  We're doing this our way, with what works for us, and for Pierce.

Wish us luck on the sleep training this weekend!!

An exciting preview!

I have several blog friends, followers, and IRL friends who are pregnant or brand new Mommies like me.  So, when I was contacted by What to Expect about partnering with me I was first skeptical...little ol' me?  I have less than 50 followers and just babble about whatever is going on in my life.  But, after talking it over with J, could this be legit?  We decided that I should write back and find out.  Sure enough, legit.  Someone at What to Expect likes my blog?  Wow.  I'm flattered, really.  Heck, I'm flattered that I have 46 followers!  46 of you actually care about my blog enough to follow?  Thanks!!

So, what am I babbling about?  They want me to review their books, and do a giveaway!  I'm waiting on the copies of the books to get to me, then if I understand correctly, not just one but TWO of you guys will also have these books!!

Stay tuned, I'll be sure to keep you guys informed about the books and the giveaway.  And, I want to make it easy for people to enter.  I see giveaways with 15 steps just to enter the rafflecopter, and I runaway from it.  I'm thinking pretty simple, follow me, follow my twitter, follow @whattoexpect, and like their facebook.  Four entries, simple?  I'd enter that giveaway.

**Hoping to get Pierce's 9 week post, and 2 month post done soon.  We spend Sunday through Wednesday at the beach, so I have a lot to update!

8 Weeks

My big boy is 8 weeks old!!  I can't believe it.  Time really is flying by, as cliche as that is, time is flying!  I'll  be back to work in 4 weeks and that makes me SO sad.

Pierce's next doctor appointment is at 10 weeks, so these numbers again are from his last check

Born: 7lb 3oz 25-50th percentile
Left hospital (20 days): 6lb 14oz 10-25th percentile
First Dr appt (3 weeks): 7lb 1oz 25-50th percentile
Second Dr appt (5wks 2 days): 8lb 4oz 5th percentile
Home scale (family's house: 7wks 4days): 10lb 25-50th percentile (not so tiny!)

Pierce stays in the 25th percentile on length, born 19", last doctor appointment he was 21 3/4"

In the past week Pierce has:
  • Started holding his head up for longer, more steady periods of time
  • Begun to stay awake between his 2nd morning bottle and first afternoon bottle.  Some days he'll take a short nap between 1st and 2nd afternoon bottles, then certainly sleep!
  • Worn 0-3mo sleepers that actually fit!  They look too cute on him too!  Carter brand, any other brand is still too big
  • Watched his first baby videos, and loved them, ABC's Mary Had a Little Lamb Jack and Jill...that's about all he had for an attention span though
  • Swatted at the bugs that hang from his playbar on his bouncey chair, the red one in particular!  I missed the first one, heard it, and thought maybe it was an accident.  He was staring at it and his hand was still mostly outstretched.  Then, he did it again while I was watching!!
  • Started eating 130-140ml instead of 120.  That extra keeps him full for an extra 30 minutes.  I can deal with bottles every 3ish hours, but don't want them any closer together.
  • Started laughing
  • Laughed during diaper changes, it's no longer a fit-throwing ordeal to change a diaper. Smiles and laughs during almost every diaper change, he looks up at the P and fedora that hang above his changing table and just smiles the prettiest toothless smile!
  • Started taking walks with Mommie and Daddy...sure fire way to get him to sleep, sound asleep about half a mile in!
  • Got his first CDs, Baby Einstein 3 disc that has classical music and fun lullabies, I'm enjoying them too lol
  • Gone on his first out of town day trip to Birmingham to visit some of J's family, he did really well.
  • Rolled half way over, from tummy to back.  He got stuck and was tired, so I think he gave up lol.  But the half roll was certainly on purpose
  • Started snoring, I have got to remember to talk to his doctor about that when we go next Friday
  • Started balling his fists and sucking on them, starting to do it for comfort
We have decided to add just a few baby signs for him to learn and use.  I don't want to get too deep into the sign language bit for him.  For now, we're doing milk, Mommie, Daddy.  We'll add a few more basics as time goes on, but I don't want to have complete conversations.  When he's old enough to communicate verbally, I want him to.  I don't want to delay that at all, but I thought it would be neat if he could tell us that he's hungry and wants milk before he has to scream.  We'll see.  I'm not pushing it too much.  While he eats a bottle or nurses I do the milk sign.  Not sure when I think he'll start to use it, but I've read about 10/12 week old babies using the milk sign.  It's really simple, just a fist squeezing motion like you're milking a cow.  Like I said, we'll see.

Be still my heart

Sound asleep, stayed this way for 10ish minutes

This face kills me, "Lady! If you take one more picture!"

Keeping it real on my blog, this is me around the house 90% of the time, lucky husband huh? LOL!!
Check out my big man!  And those Harley socks!  He looks so old in this outfit!  Love him!

From belly to this, half roll over.  He got stuck and gave up! 10/8/12

Finding his fists!

We have a pic of J at about this age, they're identical...I was just the carrier of the clone

Loving his baby videos

Let's just be real here...

With 4ish weeks left of my Stay At Home Mom gig, I'm getting some sort of handle on it.  But, let's just be real about it, it's not nearly as glamorous as some bloggers make it.  Not even kind of.
There is no makeup, unless we're going somewhere...
There are no clothes put on, unless we're going somewhere other than walking the dog...
The hair is not done, and not always when we're going somewhere, sometimes it's just up in a ponytail...
Working out is sporadic, I might get a mile-plus walk in every other day...
Showering is barely a daily thing, sometimes an every other day thing...let's just be real here.

What does my day look like?
Well, I can't show you the pictures of our morning, as I'm not one to photograph Pierce nursing.  But, we wake up and lay in bed nursing.  I don't mean sit in bed nursing, I literally mean lay in bed.  I love that aspect of nursing...I don't even have to get up to warm a bottle, just pull him next to me and whip out a boob.
We get up, I pump whatever's left. And spend the rest of the morning in my pj pants or shorts and nursing bra.
If I'm lucky, I get my coffee early in the morning...otherwise, it's during Pierce's new favorite time of the day:
Morning play time.  Which, let's just be real here, is sometimes noon play time because we're not on any strict schedule and we just get up whenever we get up.  Any time between 10 and 11 most days.

I don't know who this person is that takes over my body during play time, singing and clapping, dancing to Baby Einstein CDs.  No, wait, I do know, it's Mommie Amanda who loves to see these faces:
Happy boy

kicking around, dancing to the music
the pig is my hopes of helping him find his hands lol

Laughing at Mommie dancing around to B-I-N-G-O

"Mommie, you're kinda crazy"

The face I get most often lol
So, since we're being real...this is what I look like 5 days a week...some times 6 days a week.  Poor J:
yup, keeping it real, that's me sans makeup...and yes, my nursing bra.  Told ya
And, for our walks, we look fabulous:
He looks thrilled huh?

There you have it...just being real...a day in the life.  If Pierce let me, I'd show you the wreck we call a living room.  Baby stuff...EVERYWHERE

Poop...

My son will hate me for this when he's old enough to...well...hate me for embarrassing him.

Poop.
Poop.
Poop.
My life revolves around poop now a days.

I'm beginning to think I've been pooping all wrong; if my 7 week old son is doing it right, I'm doing it ALL WRONG.
The faces...oh the faces.  The red face, the scrunched eyebrows, the wide-eyes, open mouth, sometimes stuck-out tongue.  The tightly balled fist that always gets thrown up over his head as if to show, "Baby Power!"
The sounds...never unmistakable wet sounds.  The grunts, the squeeks.
All this goes on for 10-15 minutes.  Then?  Relief, happy baby.
Want him to poop?  Like before bath time?  Give him to J, all babies poop when J holds them, it's his special gift.

Yesterday, while changing Pierce's diaper, got him all wiped and cleaned and was doing the diaper switch.  You know, removing the folded dirty diaper out from under his hiney and pulling over the clean one.  During the switch I hear, "pffffttthhh" and at the same time I see it.  It.  It.  I screamed, covered his butt with the clean diaper, J yelled from the kitchen, "WHAT?!" I was doubled over laughing, I couldn't stop.
What was "it" you ask?  Like a water gun, poop shot straight out, hit the changing table and I swear it had to go further than that but we couldn't find it.  It wasn't much, but still.  I have a feeling this is the first time, but certainly not the last, that this happens.

J used to say that he did not do poop.  Now, he dutifully changes dirty diapers like a pro.
I must admit, I used to avoid poop diapers at all costs.  If I was watching someone's child, while they were around, they had to change the diapers.  Not my kid, not my diaper.  Doesn't bother me now.  I can get it done, no problem.

My poop fear?  That he'll go in the bath tub!!  LOL!  So far, it hasn't happened.  I think it's just a matter of time!!
